Celebrated in the US for Marat/Sade and Song of the Lusitanian Bogey, Peter Weiss also wrote a little-known play called Night with Guests. Based on the medieval German moritat – doggerel street ballads about gruesome deeds – Weiss draws on Kabuki, Punch & Judy, and crude country fair performances to create a “children’s nightmare.” Wildly theatrical. Don’t bring the kids.

For this reading, we pair Weiss’s play with Out at Sea. A political cartoonist in Poland, Slawomir Mrozek became an underground playwright during the Soviet occupation. In this wry classic Mrozek opens up territory we now call Occupy Wall Street: three men of different classes, adrift and starving on a raft, try to decide who to eat.

Bloodstone Artistic Director Bill Burford directs. Chloe Dirksen, American Bard’s Jack Herholdt, David Logan Rankin, Peter Connolly, Mary C. Davis, the John Drew’s own Josh Gladstone, and other friends of the edge gather to explore these two smarty little plays.
