This is exciting work. I’ve joined in a couple of these sessions so far–the actors who attended all experienced immediate results, and that just seems to be the beginning. MEN’S LIVES reading at Sylvester Manor’s Oct 8th Plant & Sing Festival

BLOODSTONE THEATRICAL is a performance lab created by Sag Harbor’s Bill Burford and New York’s Suzanne Savoy to provide performers the means to explore anew their ancient artform. It aims to produce both original spellbinders, based on the evolved resonances in our experience, and smarty little plays for hire.

 

THE COMPANY

JOE PINTAURO (Playwright) premiered Men’s Lives, a dramatic adaptation of Peter Mattheissen’s non-fiction book, as the first production of Bay Street Theatre at Sag Harbor in 1992.  His play Raft of the Medusa opens in revival this weekend at the Cherry Lane Theatre in NYC, originally playing at the Minetta Lane and London’s Gate Nottinghill.  Other plays include: Snow Orchid, an O’Neill Conference selection, performed at Circle Rep with Olympia Dukakis and in London starring Jude Law; Moving Targets played at the Vineyard Theatre in NYC; Beside Herself at Circle Rep with William Hurt; The Dead Boy, work-shopped at London’s Royal Court with Ian McKellan, later produced in the Netherlands (directed by Pintauro) and in Los Angeles, and also an O’Neill Conference selection; his one act Metropolitan Operas have been produced in several languages; and  By the Sea, By the Sea, By the Beautiful Sea, written with Lanford Wilson and Terrence McNally, played Bay Street Theatre and later Manhattan Theatre Club. The New York Times selected his novel Cold Hands as one of the best of the year. State of Grace, his second novel, was published by Times Books. He taught film making at Marymount College and The School of Visual Arts, N.Y., playwriting at LIU’s Southampton College and fiction writing at Sarah Lawrence and N.Y.U. Pintauro was awarded the inaugural Margaret Hill Chair in Theatre at Saint Mary’s College at Notre Dame.

BILL BURFORD (Director) is an independent theatre producer, director, writer, designer and educator.  He recently formed Bloodstone Theatrical, serves as its artistic director and through it conducts research and workshops in story-based performance. Bill was producer and then general manager for Bay Street Theatre (Sag Harbor), a dean at both Stony Brook Southampton and The Ross School, director of the Strand Street Theatre (Galveston) and a founder/director of Mercury Studio (Houston), Enterplay (San Francisco/New York City/Lake Placid), Earth Thread Mask Theatre (San Francisco) and the East End’s infamous Quack Theatrics. He teaches playwriting, independent producing and performance lab for Southampton Arts’ new MFA Program in Theatre & Film at the Southampton and Manhattan campuses of Stony Brook University. TOM GUSTIN (Walt) made his East End debut several years back as Queen Elizabeth I in Bruce Jay Friedman’s off-the-wall comedy Sardines with Peter Boyle. Since then he has appeared in plays at several venues in the Hamptons, including Bay Street Theatre, the John Drew Theatre, the Stephen Talkhouse and The Hampton Theatre Company.

STEPHEN HAMILTON (Peter) As Co-Founder and Executive Director of Bay Street Theatre for 17 years, and long-time member of New York’s pre-eminent developmental theatre, the Ensemble Studio Theatre, Steve has acted with, directed or overseen productions starring such notable actors as Alec Baldwin, Alan Alda, Dianne Weist, Mercedes Ruehl, Kate Burton, Richard Dreyfus, and Cherry Jones, and has worked with such playwrights as Terrence McNally, Lanford Wilson, Jon Robin Baitz, Craig Lucas and Annie Baker. Steve currently serves as Associate Director of the MFA in Theatre at Southampton Arts, Stony Brook Southampton and teaches acting from his studio in Sag Harbor.

KENNY KILFARA (Lee) is an educator, performer, producer, editor, website designer and award-winning filmmaker who has screened in Germany, Bermuda, across the US and Canada, and appeared in films at Sundance, the Hamptons International Film Festival and elsewhere in the US and Europe. He was full-time faculty at the University of Georgia by age 26 and teaches both in the US and abroad, including media and film for East Hampton’s Ross School. He produced and co-wrote a piece for Chicago’s Second City. He is on the Canada Lee Heritage Foundation’s Board and is a founder of the Athens Film Foundation. Kilfara is currently producer and director for a feature film about actor/activist Canada Lee. (www.canadaleedoc.com)

A.J. LEBENNS (Popeye) has been a professional actor since age 12 when he first appeared in Big at the Gateway Playhouse. He got his start studying theatre with Joe Minutillo, went on to study acting at Hofstra University and has acted, directed and worked in production for over 50 legit shows alongside such stars as Joe Piscopo (SNL), Loni Ackerman (Broadway), Oksana Baiul (Olympic gold medalist), Hardy Rawls (Nickelodeons’ Pete and Pete), Alex Lee Tano (Broadway) and Kingsley Leggs (Broadway).

DIANA MARBURY (Alice) is the artistic director of the Hampton Theatre Company, which begins its 27th season on Oct. 20th with a production of My Three Angels by Sam and Bella Spewack. Diana developed an interest in theater at an early age, and took the part of Emily in a community theater production of Our Town.  She studied theater under the guidance of Uta Hagen and Stella Adler among others and has continued her love affair with the theater ever since. She has worn many hats with the HTC over the years, including producer, director, and actor.  (www.hamptontheatre.org)

STEVE MARSH (Chuck, Senator, Courtney) is the graduate program director for Dramaturgy and Theatre at Stony Brook University’s Department of Theatre Arts. He also works with Alan Alda in the School of Journalism’s Center for Communicating Science teaching improvisation to scientists. Steve recently directed Brecht’s Galileo for the dedication of the Simon’s Center for Physics and Geometry where he will direct another project in the spring.

MARGARET PULKINGHAM (Stage Manager) is a life-long performer and teacher.  She performed liturgical and improvisational dance and sang in the choir for the Community of Celebration in England, Scotland, Sweden, elsewhere in Europe and in the United States.  She stage manages the play reading for a second Plant & Sing this year, as simply another good reason to come to the magical Manor and as a means of getting her husband a little closer to the contradance.  She dances with Kate Mueth’s Neo-Political Cowgirls on November 5th at Ashawagh Hall in Spring, NY.

MORGAN VAUGHAN (Narrator, Nate) holds an MFA in Acting from Shakespeare Theatre Company’s Academy for Classical Acting at George Washington University in DC and a Certificate in Acting Shakespeare from RADA. Regional credits include Always, Patsy Cline (Patsy); Proof (Catherine); The Cripple of Inishmaan (Helen); Oliver! (Nancy); and Noises Off! (Brooke/Vicki). Locally, she is lead singer in The Morgan Vaughan Band and teaches “Speaking Shakespeare” this fall with husband Tristan for adult actors at Guild Hall in East Hampton. (www.GuildHall.org)

TRISTAN VAUGHAN (William) studied acting at Circle in the Square Theatre School in New York City, Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London and earned an MFA in Acting from Shakespeare Theatre Company’s Academy for Classical Acting at George Washington University in DC. He has appeared at Ensemble Studio Theatre Los Angeles, Classical Acting Company, in independent films and on television. Most recently he appeared locally in Hampton Theatre Company’s The Enchanted April as Mr. Briggs. This winter, he will play Clifford in Deathtrap also at HTC. He teaches “Speaking Shakespeare” this fall with wife Morgan for adult actors at Guild Hall in East Hampton.   (www.GuildHall.org)
